No, winter hasn’t ended, but employers are starting to hire for spring and summer.

Walmart is in search of 300 workers for a new Greenwood store opening this month. Store manager J.R. Johnson said Tuesday that interviews for about every position in the store are underway.

“We are excited to bring this Walmart to Greenwood and are looking to build a strong team of associates,” said Johnson, who has been with the Arkansas-based employer for 15 years.

He said the openings are for part- and full-time work and no previous experience is necessary. Candidates will go through a three-step interview process, with base pay beginning in mid-April at $9 per hour for most jobs.

A temporary hiring center has opened at 3013 Meridian Meadows Road, with applications being accepted from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Applicants also can apply online at http://careers.walmart.com.

The company also is offering jobs to any qualified veteran who has been honorably discharged within the past 12 months. Interested veterans can get more details at http://walmartcareerswithamission.com.

Johnson said he expects to complete hiring by April 13. The store will open May 20.

Putting teens to work

Teens interested in summer employment can apply for a job through TeenWorks, a local nonprofit.

High school sophomores and juniors in Marion County are eligible for the six weeks of paid employment that will begin June 16 and end July 23.

TeenWorks plans to hire 270 teens for jobs at community partner sites such as IU Health, Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana, Indy Urban Acres, Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Great Places and the Indianapolis Cultural Trail/Bikeshare. Students who have at least a 2.5 grade point average and qualify for free or reduced-price lunches will have preference for the jobs.

According to the organization, a typical workweek will be Monday through Friday, with students working mornings at the partner site and attending afternoon sessions tailored to prepare them for a career or college. Most teens hired will earn more than $1,000 by the end of the program.

To apply, go to www.teenworks.org. Applications also are available in guidance offices of many Indianapolis high schools, or by calling TeenWorks program director Landon Martin at (317) 916-7637. The deadline to apply is April 8; applicants will be notified on April 22.
