EVANSVILLE, Ind. — A winter storm warning issued by the National Weather Service is expected to last into Thursday as sleet and snow sweeps across the tri-state area.

Forecasters said the winter storm could dump up to a foot of snow on Indiana's far southern counties by Thursday morning.

Weather service forecasters say about 6 inches of precipitation fell on the area by late Wednesday. Forecasters say another inch was possible overnight.

Elsewhere in Southern Indiana, 7 inches of snow was reported in the city of Washington late Wednesday, the weather service said.

Forecasters say any lingering snow showers from the storm stretching from northern Texas to southern New England should be out of the area by early Thursday. It will be replaced by cold.

Schools from Texas to West Virginia closed Wednesday and Penn State University canceled classes due to weather for the first time in eight years. About 1,200 flights were canceled, including 600 in and out of Dallas-Fort Worth.

Residents of Kentucky and West Virginia dealt with flooded roads and mudslides.
