Inspired Interiors: Mid-Century Modern stars in 2015
Mid-Century Modern continues its rise in popularity, both the real deal and 21st-century interpretations.
From classic outdoor styles revisited to Danish modern chairs and entertainment consoles right out of the 1950s, Mid-Century Modern furniture is enjoying a huge revival.
With its straight lines and forthright wood tones, there's nothing too ostentatious about Mid-Century.
It's not too sexy either. One of my neighbors, about to move into a chic city condo, was lamenting that her antiques are a lot of "brown furniture" and they may not make the move Downtown.
Well, Mid-Century is also a lot of brown furniture. Wood is one of the key elements to Mid-Century, especially teak and walnut. Chairs and sofas boast exposed wood frames, or chrome frames, while brown leather covers classic Eames lounge chairs.
Add to that the charm of organic woods: natural-edge wooden dining tables, turned wood lamps, petrified wood tables, wooden kitchen counters.
Mid-Century was also a time of exploration, aluminum, Sputnik, molded plywood, plastic and fiberglass. Thayer Coggin Furniture, a pioneer in contemporary design, has reintroduced the Good Egg swivel lounge chair, initially designed by Milo Baughman in 1967. The bold elliptical form resembles a scooped-out eggshell. The original was made with a rigid urethane shell, but the new model features plywood for durability.
Other manufacturers have introduced their own Mid-Century collections, including Universal's Moderne Muse, Stanley's Crestaire collection and Rowe's Modern upholstery.
In the outdoor realm, Woodard has reintroduced its famous Mid-Century design: Sculptura.
Sculptura, which first debuted in 1956, is a flowing design of woven wire available as a bench, chair, spring chair and end table. It's an airy look, not at all heavy or overstuffed. Instead, this iconic design is sculpted open mesh in the form of a loveseat that hints at being upholstered furniture, but isn't.
