Old-school ice cream: Soda fountains that serve with style

Zaharakos Ice Cream Parlor and Museum

Visitors to Zaharakos Ice Cream Parlor and Museum can enjoy an old-fashioned soda and hand-dipped milkshakes in the vintage drugstore museum, which includes a restored 1870s orchestrion. One of its most popular ice cream drinks is the Green River ice cream soda.

Hook's Drug Store Museum and Soda Fountain

1180 E. 38th St., open daily during the State Fair, Aug. 7-23, and by appointment, (317) 924-1503.

This replica of a Victorian-era drugstore features antique items from across the state and country. The sodas are created the old-fashioned way, with phosphates mixed by hand.

Alexander's On the Square

Alexander's features 36 flavors of hand-dipped ice cream from Velvet Ice Cream, a family-owned dairy celebrating its 100th year.

Cow Palace

Mint chip hand dipped milkshake from Compton's Cow Palace (318 N. Harrison St., Shelbyville).

The Palace serves American fare for breakfast, lunch and dinner. You can also enjoy a hand-dipped milkshake or malt in any of the eight flavors of Blue Bunny ice cream.

Mug-n-Bun

A piece of Speedway's history, Mug-n-Bun has been serving food for more than 50 years. The drive-in, which also has indoor seating, sells homemade root beer, and of course ice cream floats, shakes, and malts. Ice cream flavors include chocolate, strawberry, vanilla, banana, cherry, peanut butter, lemon and butterscotch.

The Historic Steer-In Diner

5130 E. 10th St., 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday, (317) 356-0996, steerin.net.

The historic drive- and eat-in restaurant serves classic ice cream floats starting with a scoop of vanilla in a frosted mug. Choose from root beer, brown cow or orange creamsicle.

Boogie Burger

Boogie Burger offers malts, floats and 20-ounce milkshakes, created with Insta Whip ice cream in six flavors. Instawhip, out of Columbus, Ohio, has been providing products to soda fountains for more than 80 years.

Traders Point Creamery

The Dairy Bar serves the creamery's artisan ice cream made from organic cream, 100 percent grass-fed milk and all natural ingredients. They also sell milkshakes, smoothies and yogurt parfaits.

Lynn's Old-Fashioned Soda Parlor

Lynn's Soda Parlor is in a pharmacy. It serves old-fashioned coke floats in cherry, chocolate, chocolate-marshmellow, lemon and vanilla. And don't miss their milkshakes, malts and phosphates.

McCord Candies

McCord's offers hand-dipped milkshakes, malts and sodas from an old-fashioned fountain. They feature 24 flavors of ice cream and offer marshmallow, chocolate and vanilla cokes.

Temple News Agency sells hand-dipped, shakes, malts and floats made with Sherman's Ice Cream, which is created one batch at a time in Michigan. The shop offers 26 flavors of ice cream.

Larrison's Diner

This small-town diner offers hand-dipped shakes, malts and floats created with Prairie Farms ice cream. Breakfast is served from 7 to 11 a.m.
