Indianapolis police have arrested a man in connection with Friday's fatal shooting on the city's Eastside.

Robert Woods, 22, faces a preliminary murder charge, police said in a news release. Authorities were called to a duplex in the 1900 block of Adams Street around 11:30 a.m. Friday after neighbors reported hearing multiple gunshots.

A teenage boy was found dead on the scene.

Family members identified the deceased as 17-year-old Kevin Cheeks. He was formerly a student at John Marshall Community High School.

Police arrested Woods early Saturday morning after a warrant was issued at a home in the 1400 block of Orange Street.

Friday story: Police investigating fatal shooting on the Eastside

Officers arrived at a duplex on the Eastside on Friday and found the front door hanging off its hinges and a man shot to death inside.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police officer Chris Wilburn said police were called to the 1900 block of Adams Street around 11:30 a.m. after neighbors reported hearing multiple gunshots.

Police entered the residence and found the man dead.

"The door was partially kicked in," Wilburn said.

Wilburn said investigators believe the shooting was related to narcotics.

Witnesses told police they saw a 1999 gray Buick with front-end damage, a dark red hood and white plastic on the driver's side door driving away from the street after the gunfire.

Detectives are searching for the car. They believe a man in his 20s was driving the vehicle.

Investigators believe that the shooting was drug related and not a random act of violence.

The street was crowded with investigators, including masked covert officers, as well as a throng of bystanders.

A group who said they believed their family member was the victim stood outside the dilapidated duplex crying and hugging, saying they hoped police would soon identify the man killed.

"I just want to go in there and be with my son," said a tearful woman who believes her son is the victim.

The family members said they don't live in that Eastside neighborhood. They said they heard about the shooting through word of mouth.

Police at the scene said investigators had not yet identified the victim.
