Kevin Plawecki

Indiana has a growing contingent of players on big-league rosters, or knocking on that door. You could put together a pretty decent pitching staff of Hoosiers, and every defensive position is covered except third base.

  • Kevin Plawecki, Mets, Catcher (Westfield HS/Purdue)

Plawecki was called up by the Mets from Triple-A Las Vegas on Sunday after New York catcher Travis d'Arnaud's hand was fractured when he was hit by a pitch.

Plawecki, 24, will be the team's starting catcher while d'Arnaud is out, according to manager Terry Collins. He hit .309 with 11 home runs and an .825 OPS in 101 games split between Double-A and Triple-A last year.

Josh Phegley (from left), Micah Johnson, Kevin Kiermaier and LaTroy Hawkins are players with Indiana ties in the major leagues.

• Lance Lynn, Cardinals, RHP (Brownsburg)

St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Lance Lynn (31) throws in the first inning of an exhibition spring training baseball game against the New York Mets Thursday, April 2, 2015, in Jupiter, Fla. (AP Photo/John Bazemore)

Season debut: He allowed just two runs, one earned, in six innings Wednesday against the Cubs, but he got no support and picked up the loss. He struck out nine.

Last season: 15-10, 2.74 ERA, 181 strikeouts in 203 2/3 innings.

Career through 2014: 49-28, 3.46 ERA, 599 strikeouts in 616 innings; 5-4, 4.41 ERA in 23 postseason appearances.

Role: He's the No. 2 starter for a Cardinals team with high expectations.

Jeff Samardzija, White Sox, RHP (Valparaiso/Notre Dame)

Season debut: Six innings, five runs allowed in an opening day 10-1 loss to the Royals.

Last season: 7-13, 2.99 ERA, 202 strikeouts in 219 2/3 innings between the Cubs and A's

Career through 2014: 36-48, 3.85 ERA, 738 strikeouts in 777 2/3 innings; one career postseason appearance, allowing one run in one inning in 2008.

Role: Though he had a rocky debut, Samardzija was acquired from Oakland in the offseason to be the ace of a rebuilt White Sox roster.

Kyle Gibson, Twins, RHP (Greenfield-Central)

Career through 2014: 15-16, 4.92 ERA, 203 1/3 innings over 41 starts.

Role: He'll be a member of the Twins rotation again. If he can eliminate a handful of disastrous starts (he had five in which he allowed six or more earned runs, seven in which he allowed zero in at least six innings), he'll be a valuable starter for rebuilding Minnesota.
