An Indianapolis man accused of stabbing his sister's boyfriend in the neck on the Westside before fleeing to Johnson County is facing a preliminary charge of attempted murder.

John Roberts, 26, was arrested late Saturday in Johnson County on suspicion of attempted murder, vehicle theft, theft and vandalism, according to Lt. Richard Riddle of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.

The stabbing was reported about 8:30 a.m. Saturday in the 2200 block of Walnut Ridge Lane, where police found a man in a bathtub bleeding from the neck, an IMPD report states.

The man, who was faint but talking, told police he was sleeping when he was attacked by Roberts. Roberts' sister said her brother fled north on Tansel Road in a black Pontiac Grand Am.

The police report says officers recovered a large, two-pronged fork that had been thrown into the snow just outside the house.

Shortly before the stabbing was reported, police were called to a Speedway gas station in the 7200 block of West 10th Street on a report of a stolen vehicle. A police report states that a man matching Roberts' description was seen on security footage getting into an unattended Grand Am and driving away.

Police reports state that some time after the stabbing, a man identified as Roberts stopped at a Speedway gas station in the 7100 block of Rockville Road and stole a donation jar containing $30 for Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health.

Roberts is accused of then making a stop at a home in the 2700 block of North Butler Avenue and shattering the windshield of a 1996 Toyota with a hatchet before getting back into the stolen vehicle and driving off.

Riddle said Roberts was transferred to the Arrestee Processing Center after giving a statement to a detective.
