As the Fourth of July approaches, setting off fireworks at the wrong time could cost up to $250 in fines, depending on where you are in the Indianapolis area.

Law enforcement agencies in Central Indiana are reminding residents of the regulations restricting private fireworks displays.

Marion County allows residents to set off legal fireworks during the hours of 5 p.m. until two hours after sunset June 28 through July 3, 10 p.m. to midnight on July 4, and 5 p.m. until two hours after sunset July 5 through July 9. Sunset in Indianapolis on July 4 is 9:16 p.m.

You must be 18 or older to buy fireworks and someone 18 or older has to be present when the fireworks are set off.

Violators are subject to a fine of $100 for the first offense.

Carmel, Fishers and Noblesville have the same allowances beginning on June 29, but fines range from $150 to $250 for the first offense.
