10 surprising things to see, eat, do in Fishers this summer

If you think Fishers' attractions are just for kids, it may be time to take a second look. From homemade egg rolls at the farmers market to fine dining at Conner Prairie Interactive History Park, Fishers is serving up a whole lot of unexpected fun.

Here's a list of unconventional things to do this summer:

1. Explore theology at St. George Orthodox Christian Church, 10748 E. 116th St., (317) 845-7755, stgindy.org.

Inspired by sixth-century architecture, the new St. George Orthodox Christian Church features hand-painted portraits of Orthodox icons created by George Kordis, an expert in iconography from the University of Athens. The church welcomes visitors, but call ahead.

2. Try the egg rolls at the Fishers Farmers Market, 6 Municipal Drive, (317) 578-0700, fisherschamber.com.

Packed with flavor, Bea Gustin's homemade pork egg rolls are a popular favorite at the farmers market, where cake pops, pasta and pretzels are also on the menu. The market is open from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays until Sept. 26.

3. Hold the hedgehogs at Uncle Bill's Pet Super Center, 14061 Mundy Drive, (317) 773-5311, unclebills.com.

What's small, brown and prickly all over? Hedgehogs! Uncle Bill's keeps hedgehogs and other exotic pets like bearded dragons in stock. Natives of Asia, Africa, Europe and Great Britain, hedgehogs are becoming a popular family pet.

4. Dine with a chef at Conner Interactive History Park (and don't forget the wine!), 13400 Allisonville Road, (317) 776-6006, connerprairie.org.

Known for its replica of a 19th-century prairie town, Conner Prairie offers events for adults, too. The Prairie Plates dining experience features meals prepared by culinary artists and chefs. Pair your dinner with wine for the event, set for 6 to 10 p.m. July 25 at Symphony on the Prairie. Tickets required.

5. Measure up to a celebrity athlete at Big League Barbers, 7436 Fishers Station Drive, (317) 842-5674, bigleaguebarbers.com.

The next time you're near a Big League Barbers shop, stop in and check your height. The barbershop chain invites customers to measure up to celebrity athletes like Michael Jordan, Howie Long, Cal Ripken Jr., Mia Hamm and Serena Williams.

6. Take a tour of The Legends Museum at CMG Worldwide Inc., 10500 Crosspoint Blvd., (317) 570-5000,cmgworldwide.com.

This museum showcases the treasures of celebrities from Amelia Earhart to Jackie Robinson. CMG Worldwide, Inc., represents intellectual properties of about 250 celebrities, including Bettie Page, James Dean and Billie Holiday.

7. Pick up a dossant at Jack's Donuts of Fishers, 13578 E. 131st St., (317) 214-7152, jacksdonuts.com.

A cross between a croissant and a doughnut, the dossant is a popular favorite available only at the doughnut company's Fishers location. Bakers at the doughnut shop deep-fry croissants and dip them in glaze. The dossants are served plain, but customers also have the option of adding chocolate or caramel syrup.

8. Read a book under the water tower at the Fisher Public Library, 5 Municipal Drive, (317) 579-0300, hepl.lib.in.us.

The Fishers Library has a water tower replica in its reading room for children.

A wide wooden water tower anchors the Kid's Corner of the library, where a model train and a colorful mural decorate the walls. The library offers story time and children's activities throughout the year. The summer reading program runs through July 31.

9. Grab a drink at Toucan's Tiki Hut, 13825 Britton Park Road (317) 773-9988, bowlatpinheads.com

This tropical oasis is connected to Pinheads Entertainment Center between 131st and 141st streets. Bartenders at Toucan's Tiki Hut are mixing up a drink they call Sand in Your Toucan. The tropical cocktail is a blend of rum, raspberry liqueur, pineapple juice, orange juice and a splash of cranberry. A beach party featuring a salute to Jimmy Buffett is set for 6 p.m. on June 21.

10. Check out the workout Wednesday at the Nickel Plate District Amphitheater, 1 Municipal Drive, (317) 595-3111, fishers.in.us.

Break a sweat alongside a fitness instructor from the Fishers YMCA every Wednesday in Fishers. Kids ages 11-15 are permitted to join the fun with a parent. Child care is also available for members at the Fishers YMCA.
