Indiana University students are planning a vigil Wednesday evening for two of their own who were found dead in separate incidents last week.

The body of Joseph Smedley II, 20, was recovered Friday night at Griffey Reservoir, north of the IU-Bloomington campus, four days after he was reported missing.

Yaolin Wang, 21, was found dead inside an apartment complex Wednesday night from apparent stab wounds. Bloomington Police suspect her boyfriend, 20-year-old Chuanlin Xiao, killed her before hanging himself.

According to the official IU Twitter account, the student-led vigil is being conducted  in memory of Smedley and Wang at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Dunn Meadow on Seventh Street and Indiana Avenue in Bloomington.

Monroe County Coroner Nicole Meyer said last week that foul play was not suspected in Smedley's death, whose manner of death was consistent with drowning.

Smedley's family released a statement through an attorney Saturday that said they were "heartbroken" by his death, adding that, "Joseph was an intelligent and loving son, brother and friend."

A memorial service for Smedley is also planned for 2 p.m. Saturday at Lawrence Central High School, his alma mater.

In Wang's case, Bloomington Police said no one other than Xiao was suspected of having any involvement. Officials said Xaio, who previously lived in Washington state, had lived in Bloomington with Wang for about a month before the murder-suicide.
