A woman was struck and killed by a train Saturday night in Lawrence, police said.

The 25-year-old woman, who has not been identified, was walking along train tracks around 9:30 p.m. with her boyfriend after leaving a convenience store, said Lawrence Police Capt. Gary Woodruff.

Near Kingman Drive and East 43rd Street — close to Shadeland Avenue and Pendleton Pike — the pair heard a train approaching. They moved over to walk on the other side of the tracks, thinking they were out of the way, Woodruff said.

They put their hands over their ears as the CSX train got closer and louder with the engineer sounding the horn, he said.

The woman was too close to the train, which hit her as it passed, Woodruff said. She died at the scene. Her boyfriend was not injured.

“It is just a recurring reminder of the inherent danger of walking along railroad tracks, which should be avoided,” Woodruff said.
