Colts rookie Denzelle Good gets a look at right tackle

Indianapolis Colts offensive tackle Denzelle Good (71),right, warms up with Jack Mewhort (75),left, before the start of their preseason game against the St. Louis Rams Saturday, August 29, 2015, evening at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis MO.

When the Indianapolis Colts used a seventh-round pick on an offensive tackle from a school most had never heard of, it seemed unlikely Denzelle Good would play a role for them in 2015.

But the potential for that now exists with left tackle Anthony Castonzo potentially out for multiple games with a knee sprain.

One of the possible solutions being explored by the Colts has Good, a rookie from Division II Mars Hills in North Carolina, filling at right tackle, with current right tackle Joe Reitz flipping to left tackle for Castonzo. Good got some work at the position Wednesday, but whether he gets the call on Sunday remains undetermined, the Colts said.

"We haven't made any final decisions," coach Chuck Pagano said. "We've practiced him there, we've practiced (Jack) Mewhort there. We've got a ton of guys who can do a ton of things for us. So there's no final decision on that yet."

But Good seems to be a tempting option. The Colts don't have much to go on; Good has been inactive for each of the team's 10 games this season. But what they saw in the preseason and in practices has them intrigued.

Anthony Castonzo out with knee sprain

"He's got great size, great length, got excellent feet," Pagano said. "He's a dancing bear out there for a guy who is 350 pounds. He's smart. I mean, the guy picks things up. He's just young and it takes time for guys. He works extremely hard and he's a talented guy. He's got all the traits you're looking for."

There's a case to be made for Good starting in Castonzo's absence and it's this: Inserting him into the lineup is probably the least disruptive way to fill the hole. The other primary option – using Mewhort as a right tackle – will require the Colts to make a change at left guard, too. Using Good involves fewer moving parts. It also keeps Mewhort at his position of strength, guard. He's not a great option at tackle, something the Colts learned earlier in the season.

Injury report

The Colts had 12 players listed on their injury report Wednesday, seven of which are names to watch this week: safety Mike Adams (ankle), cornerback Vontae Davis (hamstring), linebacker Jerrell Freeman (ribs), running back Frank Gore (ankle), guard Hugh Thornton (shoulder), linebacker Erik Walden (foot) and cornerback D'Joun Smith (knee) each missed practice Wednesday.

Linebacker Robert Mathis and receiver Andre Johnson sat out for rest. Quarterback Andrew Luck (abdominal), receiver Phillip Dorsett (leg) and Castonzo (knee) are dealing with longer term injuries.
