A Carmel woman was killed Monday morning when she stepped in front of a dump truck that was driving on I-465, police said.

Indiana State Police Sgt. Rich Myers said the woman died instantly when she was hit by the truck shortly after 10 a.m.

She was on foot on I-465 in the westbound lanes, near the 32-mile marker on the Far Northside.

Witnesses said the woman was standing on the right side of the road in the emergency shoulder near a 2014 Subaru sedan when she stepped away from her vehicle, police said.

She then ran into the I-465 travel lanes and was hit by a 2003 International dump truck registered to V&S Transport Inc.

Myers said the initial investigation indicates the death was a suicide. The incident remains under investigation.
