Child recovering after being hit near Children's Museum

Update: A toddler is recovering in the hospital with a concussion after being struck by a car near the Children's Museum, police said. The 3-year-old did not suffer any internal injuries, according to IMPD Lt. Richard Riddle.

A 3-year-old child is in critical condition after being hit by a car Monday outside The Children's Museum.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department spokesman Sgt. Kendale Adams said the child was leaving the museum on the Near Northside with his father but wandered onto Illinois Street and was hit by an oncoming car.

The accident occurred near 30th and Illinois streets just before 4 p.m.

Adams said the driver swerved to avoid the child but lost control, hitting the child and later crashing into a tree near a parking garage.

Fox 59 reported the 3-year-old initially lost consciousness but awoke en route to the hospital.

Alcohol was not thought to be a factor, and no other injuries were reported.
