As the holiday weekend draws near, the city is warning residents that ozone levels will rise to an unhealthy level on Saturday.

The city has declared what it calls a Knozone Air Quality Action Day, meaning the air quality may be harmful for some people.

People sensitive to air pollutants, like children, senior citizens and those with respiratory diseases like asthma are advised to limit their time outdoors.

The first week of September has brought a heat wave to the region, with temperatures rising unseasonably high, reaching past 90 degrees some days.

The city asks resident to take these steps to help control pollution:

  • Reducing vehicle idling
  • Biking or walking instead of driving
  • Carpooling
  • Using public transportation like IndyGo
  • Combining errands
  •  Filling gas tanks and mowing after 6 p.m.
