Check out 10 highlights of ARTx programming at IMA

The Indianapolis Museum of Art unveiled Wednesday more than 70 events for the second year of its ARTx series, public programming that ranges from a fashion-design competition and modern dance performance to an art trivia challenge and a screening of “Boyz n the Hood.”

We spotlight 10 attention-grabbing events below (nine will happen at the IMA, 4000 Michigan Road). For the full 2015-16 ARTx roster, visit IMAmuseum.org.

1. Internet Cat Video Festival

7 p.m. Nov. 20, Tobias Theater, $10 or $8 for members.

Scott Stulen, the museum’s curator of audience experiences and performance, produced the first two editions of the Internet Cat Video Festival in 2012 and 2013 at Minnesota’s Walker Art Center. Last year’s festival featured 85 videos spanning 75 minutes. At the IMA, famous Hoosier cat Lil’ Bub will be part of the show.

2. Know No Stranger productions

“Optical Popsicle: Infinity,” 8 p.m. Oct. 15, 3 and 8 p.m. Oct. 17, Tobias Theater, $20 or $15 for members; “Know No Stranger: The Musical,” 7 p.m. April 7-9, Tobias Theater, $20 or $15 for members.

Know No Stranger, a performance troupe that serves as the museum’s artist-in-residence, will present its annual “Optical Popsicle” show as well as the original, full-length “Know No Stranger: The Musical.”

3. Richard Wentworth installation

“False Ceiling — Indianapolis” opens with a conversation with the artist, 6 p.m. Sept. 24, Tobias Theater, free.

English sculptor Richard Wentworth will visit Indianapolis to talk about his latest installation of “False Ceiling,” a hanging-books project that will reside in the Efroymson Family Entrance Pavilion. Through Sept. 8, the IMA is inviting the public to donate gently used books at the museum and Indy Reads Books, 911 Massachusetts Ave., for use in “False Ceiling.”

4. “Surface Image” in concert

7 p.m. Sept. 11, Room 152, IUPUI Informatics and Communications Technology Complex, 535 W. Michigan St., $15 or $10 for IMA and Classical Music Indy members or free for IUPUI students and faculty.

Composer Tristan Perich and pianist Vicky Chow collaborated on “Surface Image,” a recording that Rolling Stone magazine ranked as No. 4 on its list of 20 best avant albums of 2014. Perich and Chow will execute “Surface Image,” a work for solo piano and 40-channel 1-bit electronics, in person on the campus of IUPUI.

5. Monster Drawing Rally

6 to 9 p.m. Dec. 3, Deer Zink Pavilion, free.

One of Stulen’s success stories of 2014 will return in December. More than 100 artists will churn out original drawings that collectors can buy for a flat price of $35 each. All Monster Drawing Rally proceeds support ARTx programming at the IMA.

6. ARTx Grown-Up Summer Camp

8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Aug. 29, Indianapolis Museum of Art campus, attendees must be 21 or older, $150 or $125 for members.

Kids need not apply for this daylong adventure with artists, musicians, chefs, curators and performers throughout the IMA campus. Highlights include a visit to Indianapolis Island at the 100 Acres art and nature park and a tutorial on urban beekeeping.

7. Three editions of “B-Movie Bingo”

“Collision Course,” 8 p.m. Aug. 22, Tobias Theater, $12 or $6 for members; “Samurai Cop,” 8 p.m. Dec. 10, Tobias Theater, $12 or $6 for members; “Leprechaun,” 8 p.m. March 17, Tobias Theater, $12 or $6 for members.

Also returning from the 2014 ARTx roster is “B-Movie Bingo,” a celebration of how bad a film can be. After last year’s screening of Indonesian action film “The Stabilizer,” the IMA is commissioned Oregon-based collective Wolf Choir to bring “Collision Course” (starring Jay Leno), “Samurai Cop” and “Leprechaun” (Jennifer Aniston’s big-screen debut) to town.

8. Artist-Designed miniature golf

May 5 to Oct. 30, Alliance Sculpture Court, pricing to be announced.

As a way to salute Indiana’s 200th birthday, the IMA will assemble a Hoosier-themed 18-hole miniature golf course on campus next summer. The museum is seeking artists, designers, architects and fabricators to devise original holes inspired by the state’s history and landmarks.

9. Punk rock photo show

5 to 9 p.m. March 3, Tobias Theater, free.

Black-and-white photos of iconic punk bands Black Flag and Minor Threat will be displayed when old-school, non-digital shooter Bill Daniel brings his “Tri-X-Noise” show to the IMA. Indianapolis musicians will perform to round out the multi-media experience.

10. “The Salt of the Earth” film

7 p.m. Oct. 1, DeBoest Lecture Hall, $9 or $5 for members.

This 2014 film, co-directed by Wim Wenders and Juliano Ribeiro Salgado, earned an Academy Award nomination in the category of best documentary feature. “The Salt of the Earth” tells the life story of Salgado’s father, globe-trotting photojournalist Sebastiao Salgado.
