Frank Gore on Andre Luck: ‘He’s a football God'

The storyline is a bit redundant: Newcomer joins the Indianapolis Colts, newcomer offer effusive praise of quarterback Andrew Luck.

It took Andre Johnson, a seven-time Pro Bowler with 12 seasons under his belt, all of two practices in Indianapolis to decide Luck was “probably the best quarterback I’ve ever played with.” His opinion hasn’t changed in the intervening three months.

Johnson’s longtime friend, and former college teammate, Frank Gore, took the praise to a different level on Wednesday. He called Luck “a football God.”

“He runs meetings like a coach,” Gore said on The Jim Rome Show. “Basically, I’m playing with a coordinator on the field. He's a football god. He sees everything. He sees the big picture of everything ... He lets me know when (there is) something I don't see. He's just different. How he's in the huddle, off the field, in the meetings, he runs it. He runs the show, even in the offseason, he ran it. One day he had running backs, the next day he has receivers. He's just different. He’s a football God.”

That’s some hefty praise for a fourth-year player. And especially coming from Gore, a 10-year vet with 11,000 rushing yards and five Pro Bowls to his name.

But it’s no surprise Gore and Johnson — who both cited Luck as a principal reason as to why they chose the Colts in free agency — have taken a liking to their new signal-caller. It’s the same reason as a rookie in 2012, Luck quickly earned Reggie Wayne’s respect. He’s the No. 1 pick and future MVP who never acts like the No. 1 pick and future MVP.

An example: Last week, following a joint practice with the Chicago Bears, Luck was seen holding the door for nearly a dozen teammates. How many franchise quarterbacks do that?

Asked what his new quarterback was really like, Johnson said this of Luck: “He’s goofy. Really goofy. But he’s smart as hell. He says, ‘Do this,’ and on the next play, I’m wide open.”

Sound familiar?

It appears Johnson and Gore aren’t regretting their decision to come to Indianapolis.
