A parking lot in Downtown Indianapolis soon may be getting a makeover.

Choice Hotels International, based in Rockville, Md., is proposing a 11-story Cambria Hotel & Suites on the site of a surface parking lot at 230 S. Meridian St., at the intersection of South Meridian Street and Jackson Place.

In plans filed with the Indianapolis Historic Preservation Commission, Ratio Architects said the hotel would have 193 rooms and suites and an indoor pool and fitness center.

A lobby, restaurant and lounge would occupy the first floor. Floors two through four would house 164 parking spaces. Nineteen rooms would share the fifth floor with a fitness center and the remaining rooms would be on the sixth through eleventh floors. The fifth floor would also have a south-facing deck, providing a view of Jackson Place and the Pan Am Plaza.

The building exterior would be a blend of brick on the north, south and part of the west sides and feature glass with aluminum framing and terra cotta grill work on the east side of the building.

According to the proposal, the property once housed a few two- to five-story buildings. It was then covered with a one-story metal warehouse. In 1992, the parking lot replaced the warehouse.

The plans were for a preliminary review, giving the applicant a chance to discuss their proposal with the commission. Ratio Architects requested that the proposal be heard by the commission at its Nov. 4 meeting.
