Brandon Peters is on his way to play for Jim Harbaugh and Michigan.

Avon quarterback Brandon Peters was named Gatorade Indiana Football Player of the Year on Thursday.

Peters, a 6-5, 210-pound Michigan recruit, led Avon to its first regional championship in a decade. He passed for 3,103 yards and 37 touchdowns against five interceptions.

The award recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character on and off the field. Peters maintained a 3.5 grade-point average and was a standout varsity basketball player.

Peters plans to enroll at Michigan in January. He is now eligible for the Gatorade National Football Player of the Year award announced later this month.

Recent winners of the Gatorade Indiana Football Player of the Year include: Columbus East’s Markell Jones (2014), Elwood’s Sammy Mireles (2013), Mishawaka’s Sam Schrader (2012), Columbus East’s Gunner Kiel (2011), Evansville Reitz’s Matt McIntosh (2010), Cathedral’s Kofi Hughes (2009) and Carmel’s Morgan Newton (2008).

Peters is the first winner from Avon. He's been selected to play in the 2016 U.S. Army All-American Bowl and figures to be among the frontrunners for IndyStar Mr. Football.
