Updated at 4:15 p.m. Saturday:

Indianapolis police have identified Brandon Gregg, 33, as the suspect arrested in this incident.

Gregg faces preliminary charges of being a serious violent felon in possession of a handgun, battery on a law enforcement officer, operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, and resisting law enforcement.

He is still being treated at Eskenazi Hospital for his gunshot wounds and is in stable condition as of Saturday afternoon, according to a news release from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.

The Marion County prosecutor's office will make the final decision on charges.

Earlier story:

Indianapolis police say they shot an armed man early Saturday when he tried to flee from an arrest.

The suspect, who has not yet been identified, was taken to Eskenazi Hospital in stable condition.

Police say the incident began when they received a complaint about a motorist who was driving erratically — “swerving in and out of lanes,” according to a witness — in a blue Envoy with a temporary license plate at about 1 a.m. in the vicinity of East 10th Street and North Sherman Drive.

An officer followed the vehicle and pulled the motorist over at East 10th Street and North Shadeland Avenue to see whether he was driving drunk.

When the officer asked the motorist to get out of the car, he initially refused, police said, before then jumping out of the vehicle, pushing the officer down to the ground and then running off across 10th Street.

A second officer who began to chase the suspect behind a business complex noticed that the fugitive had a gun in his hand, police said.

The officer then fired his handgun and the suspect “sustained gunshot wounds to his lower extremities,” according to a news release. Police said a handgun and holster were recovered from the scene.

The suspect continued to resist arrest, according to police, even as officers were attempting to give him first aid. He was then taken to the hospital.

The suspect faces preliminary charges of being a serious violent felon in possession of a handgun, battery on a police officer, operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated and resisting law enforcement.

The officer involved in the shooting will be placed on administrative leave, police said, standard practice in a shooting involving an officer. The Internal Affairs Unit also will conduct a separate investigation.
