A man accused of shooting and critically wounding a clerk at a Speedway gas station early Tuesday before stealing nachos from the store has been arrested.

Investigators arrested 26-year-old Terrance Harris around 8 a.m. Tuesday on preliminary charges of attempted murder and robbery. He was located on Renn Lane on the Northwestside.

A witness told police that a man, later identified as Harris, walked into the store in the 7100 block of North Keystone Avenue around 1 a.m. and spoke to the clerk.

The man and the clerk exchanged a few words, the witness said, according to a press release from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.

The man asked about nachos, and then left, police said.

But shortly after, the man returned and shot the clerk in the face and the abdomen.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officer Chris Wilburn said Harris did not threaten to rob the store of cash from the register.

But Wilburn said the suspect ran away with nachos after the shooting.

"It is a strange set of circumstances," Wilburn said.

After he was shot, the employee called police and locked the door. Officers arrived and found the victim lying on the floor, the press release said.

The clerk is in critical but stable condition, police said.

Wilburn said the clerk is able to speak with detectives.
