A man who escaped from the Hendricks County Jail in a stolen truck has been recaptured.

Escapee Wayne E. Mitchell was recaptured Friday afternoon in Greenwood, according to Hendricks County Sheriff Brett Clark.

Mitchell, 32, Indianapolis, was working in a municipal garage Thursday when he stole a 2012 Dodge Ram that belonged to the county planning department, said Capt. Amanda Goings, a spokeswoman for the Hendricks County Sheriff's Department.

Mitchell was last seen about 7:15 p.m. Thursday; his escape was discovered at 4:20 a.m. Friday, Goings said.

Clark said Mitchell was recaptured Friday near the Greenwood Mall without incident. The Ram 1500 truck he stole was undamaged.

Mitchell had been held in the jail since Dec. 18 for failure to appear and had been an inmate worker trusted to perform jobs outside of the jail since Jan. 4.

The jail's outside inmate worker program has been suspended while officials evaluate the procedures, Goings said.
