Twenty-five people were forced from their homes early Sunday after a two-alarm fire broke out at an apartment complex near Ben Davis High School.

Shortly after 4 a.m. Sunday, firefighters from five departments were called to the blaze at Westpark Townhomes in the 7800 block of West Swallowtail Drive.

Captain Mike Pruitt of the Wayne Township Fire Department said eight units were impacted by the fire. Seven of the units were occupied.

Everyone inside the building made it out safely, Pruitt said. One occupant was checked for smoke inhalation but did not go to the hospital.

Pruitt said crews arrived to find heavy fire and smoke coming from the apartment building. The fire quickly spread into the attic of the building.

The combined effort of the Wayne Township, Pike Township, Avon, Speedway and Indianapolis fire departments brought the fire under control in about 30 minutes. Pruitt said the damage was estimated at $200,000.

Ten adults and 15 children were displaced by the incident. They are being assisted by Wayne Township Victim’s Assistance.

Pruitt said the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
