An Indianapolis Metropolitan Police officer will serve 180 days on probation after he admitted on Friday to driving drunk.

Daniel Greenwell, a 36-year-old officer with the East District who is on administrative leave, struck a plea agreement with prosecutors after he was arrested on Sept. 20 for driving drunk with a woman riding in the passenger seat.

Court records show that Greenwell pleaded guilty to operating a vehicle while intoxicated with a blood alcohol content of between .08 and .15.

Prosecutors then dismissed a second misdemeanor count of operating while intoxicated and endangering a person.

Judge Becky Pierson-Treacy on Friday sentenced Greenwell to 60 days in jail, but suspended the sentence, so he will only serve the time if he violates the terms of his probation.

Pierson-Treacy also ordered a probation term of 180 days that comes with a 30-day driver's license suspension, random drug and alcohol testing and a substance abuse evaluation.

Greenwell is on administrative leave, pending a final discipline decision from the chief of police, IMPD Lt. Richard Riddle said.
