Two people were shot Monday afternoon during a car chase that ended when the victims' car crashed into the front steps of a home on Indianapolis' Eastside.

Officer Rafael Diaz, a spokesman for the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, said the shots were first heard before 5 p.m. near the corner of 34th Street and Forest Manor Avenue, where at least two people were chasing a white SUV.

The SUV turned onto Forest Manor, then crashed into a bush and came to rest on the front steps of a home in the 3500 block.

The male driver was found with gunshot wounds to his neck and head but early Monday evening was listed as stable at Ezkenazi Hospital.

A female passenger was shot in the side and was taken to IU Health Methodist Hospital in critical condition. Later, she was upgraded to serious condition, Diaz said.

Witnesses told police that the suspected shooters were driving a dark gray, mid-2000s model Pontiac Grand Prix or Chevrolet Impala.

Diaz said it was not clear Monday afternoon what instigated the shooting. An investigation is ongoing.
