Maxwell Winkler, 18, of Fishers, faces an 85-year sentence, has agreed to plead guilty in the brutal slaying of Henry Kim, 73.

NOBLESVILLE – A suburban Indianapolis teenager charged with fatally attacking a 73-year-old man has been found competent to stand trial.

Two medical experts testified in court Friday that 17-year-old Matthew Winkler, Fishers, suffers from several mental disorders including autism, but they said Winkler still understands the consequences of the trial and his legal options.

Winkler’s attorneys argued the teen was not competent to stand trial. Hamilton County Superior Court Judge William Hughes ruled against them.

Winkler faces a murder charge in the Nov. 1 slaying of Henry Kim. Authorities say Kim was shot three times and his throat was cut in a subdivision near Geist Reservoir, where both he and Winkler lived. His attorneys have filed a notice of an insanity or mental disease defense.

Winkler’s trial is set for Jan. 19.
