These athletes were chosen for the week ending Jan. 16.

WRESTLING

South Bend Riley wrestler Kassius Breathitt

KASSIUS BREATHITT, South Bend Riley

This past weekend Breathitt helped his team finish third in the North Indiana Athletic Conference by winning the 152 weight class. He is now 34-4 overall.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Whitko basketball player Nathan Walpole

NATHAN WALPOLE, Whitko

Walpole surpassed the 1,000-point career mark against Southwood on Jan. 15.  He finished with 18 points and five rebounds. On Jan. 16, Walpole had 36 points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals against Peru. He currently stands with 1,047 career points as a junior.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Kankakee basketball player Breanna Toppen

BREANNA TOPPEN, Kankakee

On Jan. 16, Toppen reached 1,000 career points. She is just the third girls player in school history to reach this feat. Toppen finished the game with 17 points, four rebounds and two steals.

GIRLS BOWLING

Greenwood Christian Academy bowler Alexandra Ross

ALEXANDRA ROSS, Greenwood Christian Academy

Ross won the state champion title during her freshman year. Now, as a junior, she is on the road to win another. She bowled a high game of 258 with a series-high of 459 against Perry Meridian on Jan. 11. Her average of 211 is 30 pins higher than any other female bowler in the conference and ties her for first in the state.

BOYS BOWLING

Pendleton Heights bowler Nick Squires

NICK SQUIRES, Pendleton Heights

Squires rolled a perfect 300 game to lead the state for the week. He also had the third-highest series with 536. He is currently tied with the top average in the state with 230.

GIRLS SWIMMING

South Bend Riley swimmer Abby Kirkpatrick

ABBY KIRKPATRICK, South Bend Riley

Kirkpatrick helped lead her team to a second place finish in the NIC on Jan. 16. She was named NIC MVP for girls swimming. She anchored the winning 200 free relay as well as winning the 100 butterfly and second in the 100 breaststroke.
