Man killed in fall from Downtown garage was homeless

Police investigated the death of a man who apparently jumped or fell from a Downtown parking garage Monday, April 11, 2016.

Update: Police believe the man killed in a fall from a Downtown parking garage Monday committed suicide.

The man was believed to be homeless.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department detectives are investigating the death as a suicide, IMPD spokesman Sgt. Kendale Adams said.

Earlier: Police are investigating the death of a man who apparently jumped or fell from a Downtown parking garage Monday evening.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers and emergency medical crews were called to the 100 block of South Illinois Street around 4:35 p.m. Monday on a report of a person down on the sidewalk in front of the parking garage next to Steak 'n Shake.

The man, who was lying in the driveway of the parking garage, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

"It appears someone has either fallen or jumped from" the parking garage, IMPD Sgt. Catherine Cummings told IndyStar in an emailed statement.

A doorman at Le Meridien Hotel, across the street from where the incident happened, told IndyStar he saw the man jump from the top floor of the parking garage.

Traffic continued to flow north on Illinois Street as homicide detectives began their investigation.
