If the idea of living in an old schoolhouse warms your heart, stop by this northwest side property for a tour.

In 1971, the Children’s House opened a Montessori school in a house at 2401 W. 39th St. The institution moved to West 62nd Street in 1995, but small pieces of school history, including the original built-ins used for book storage, remain in the home listed for $2.25 million.

The home, which was built in 1935, had marble floors throughout when the school moved in, Mary Sexson recalled. She worked in the house in the 90s.

"One of the most vivid memories I have is kids always playing outside," Sexson said. "“It was incredible because there was all of this land around it (the house)."

Hot Property: Zionsville colonial in the country

The abundance of space and land allowed to the school to have a goat, two cats, at least four birds and a dog, Sexson recalled. Inside, bedrooms doubled as classrooms and the front parlor served as a library.

Two decades after the school moved, the home has received a major makeover. Home owner, Rich Carlen Jr., put his touch on every corner of the home made for entertainment.

The home has two kitchens, five bedrooms, eight bathrooms and a sun room with heated floors. The mansion is tucked away. Visitors are greeted by a gate at the entrance of a long driveway.

Parking is ample on the property, which is equipped with a 1,600-square-foot garage. The home also features an outdoor oasis with a swimming pool, hot tub and 4 acres of park-like landscaping.

Inside, a two master bedrooms offer a space for relaxation, and when it’s time to do some work, two laundry rooms make it easy to keep your linens and sheets clean.

When you’re ready to leave the mansion, attractions and amenities are close by, said F.C. Tucker Realtor Lisa Meiners.

The home is just west of the Indianapolis Museum of Art and The Woodstock Country Club  and just north of Marian University.

For home buyers looking to keep a family entertained, the Children’s Museum is about nine minutes from the home.
