Musicians will pay tribute to Frank Sinatra (1915-1998) during opening-night festivities of Indy Jazz Fest, scheduled Sept. 10 at the University of Indianapolis.

Picks from freelance writer Seth Johnson and Star reporter David Lindquist for the best Central Indiana concerts happening Sept. 4-10.

Indy Jazz Fest opening night

7 p.m. Sept. 10, Christel DeHaan Fine Arts Center at the University of Indianapolis, 1400 E. Hanna Ave., free, (317) 788-3251, thingstodo.indystar.com/events.

The 17th annual Indy Jazz Fest kicks off with a special tribute concert honoring Frank Sinatra, who would’ve turned 100 this December. The festival will run Sept. 10-19 at numerous venues around the city, with performances from internationally acclaimed acts such as vocalist Dianne Reeves, fusion artist Jonathan Butler and a cappella gospel sextet Take 6. The 10-day fest, which also includes a diverse selection of local and regional acts, will conclude with an all-day block party on the corner of 54th Street and College Avenue.

Motorhead

7:30 p.m. Sept. 9, Murat Theatre in Old National Centre, 502 N. New Jersey St., $15 to $99.50, (317) 231-0000, thingstodo.indystar.com/events.

Lemmy Kilmister will perform with Motorhead on Sept. 9 at Old National Centre.

Led by frontman Lemmy Kilmister’s rasping roar, this iconic speed metal band has released 22 albums over its 40-year career. In fact, Motorhead’s most recent album, “Bad Magic,” arrived last week. The road hasn’t been smooth for the tour that comes to Indianapolis: Citing altitude sickness, Kilmister canceled Motorhead shows in Salt Lake City and Denver. Long-running English band Saxon also will appear at the Murat.

Dierks Bentley

7 p.m. Sept. 5, Klipsch Music Center, 12880 E. 146th St., Noblesville, $31.25 to $56, (800) 745-3000, thingstodo.indystar.com/events.

Dierks Bentley will perform on Sept. 5 at Klipsch Music Center.

After headlining Klipsch Music Center for the first time last September, this 11-time Grammy nominee returns to Noblesville, with touring support from a trio of rising country acts: Kip Moore, Maddie & Tae and Canaan Smith. Bentley has scored mainstream success with all seven of his studio albums since emerging in 2003, each landing in the Billboard 200’s Top 10. Last year’s “Riser,” which peaked at No. 6, featured the hits “I Hold On,” “Say You Do” and “Drunk on a Plane.”

Fishbone

9 p.m. Sept. 9, the Hi-Fi, 1043 Virginia Ave., $20, (317) 493-1209, thingstodo.indystar.com/events.

Angelo Moore will perform with Fishbone on Sept. 9 at the Hi-Fi.

The Roots’ Questlove has called this iconic ska/punk group “the greatest band that the world ignored.” Formed back in 1979, Fishbone gained a large cult following in the late ‘80s with its electrifying live shows but never quite reached mainstream audiences despite decades of work. The group released a five-song EP, “Intrinsically Intertwined,” last year.

The Coathangers

9 p.m. Sept. 9, Radio Radio, 1119 E. Prospect St., $10, (317) 955-0995, thingstodo.indystar.com/events.

The Coathangers will perform on Sept. 9 at Radio Radio.

When this Atlanta garage-rock band originally came together, it was for the sole purpose of hanging out and playing parties.

Now the trio is touring the world on the strength of four full-length releases, with 2014’s “Suck My Shirt” being its most successful to date. The Coathangers recently toured in support of fellow Atlanta rockers the Black Lips.
