RICHMOND -- Richmond Police Department detectives are investigating the deaths of two twin infants found in an apartment Monday.

Shortly before noon Monday, investigators were called to Nine North Apartments in the 200 block of North Ninth Street after a resident called to report an unresponsive baby, according to Sgt. Mike Britt of the Richmond Police Department.

The two unidentified three-month-olds were transported to Reid Health where they were pronounced dead, Britt said. He added that there were no obvious signs of foul play, and the infants were being taken to the Montgomery County, Ohio, Coroner's Office for autopsies.

"We saw no articulable signs of trauma or cause of death," Britt said Tuesday morning. "The investigation is fully active and we're waiting on autopsy results out of Dayton, Ohio.

"This could be a natural death. We just don't know. But every death is treated as a homicide until we prove that it's not."

Britt said because the case is still being investigated, he is unable to comment further. More information is expected when the autopsies are complete.

Richmond is about 72 miles east of Indianapolis near the Ohio border.
