Bison come charging at an SUV in Yellowstone National Park.

Corrections & Clarifications: A previous version of the story incorrectly identified the animal as a buffalo.

"Don't run into our car!"

A bison charged into a parked SUV in Yellowstone National Park in a video uploaded to YouTube by amateur photographer Tom Carter on Feb. 26, which shows an animal coming straight ahead at a Nissan Xterra.

What prompted the incident?

Carter, who was in the vehicle at the time with a friend, thinks bison were being agitated by cars.

"There is a line of cars that is chasing the buffalo [bison]. Park regulations say you should not harass the wildlife and really what they should have done once they agitated the three buffalo is they should have given them space. But they did not," he added.

Carter, 60, of Dallas, who was a tour guide at Yellowstone in the 1970s and since has spent significant time hiking in the area, saw the animals approaching at about 300 yards away.

"I really thought they were just going to run right by. After he rammed us, the other two just stopped," Carter told USA TODAY Network. "I just happened to be in the right place at the wrong time."

Damage to the car, which is owned by friend Suzie Hollingsworth, totaled about $2,788, according to AAA estimates, Carter said. And if you'd like to check out the damage, you can watch this YouTube video.

"Not only was it unusual to happen," Carter added. "It was a dead run."

After the encounter, the bison walked along the passenger's side of the vehicle "and continued on his way."

Thankfully, the car was stopped and shut off so airbags did not deploy, which could have caused more damage, he said.

"There was no place to go to get off the road. We were stuck," Carter added.

Carter said he was more surprised than scared of the mid-February incident.

"I was never worried about my personal safety. He picked on somebody his own size (meaning the car)."
