Megabus driver cited for speeding in I-65 crash

Matt Adams, Fox59

JOHNSON COUNTY – The driver of a Megabus that crashed on I-65 last week in Johnson County was cited for speeding, according to Fox59. Indiana State Police said the bus showed no signs of mechanical problems.

State police completed their inspection of the bus, which crashed during the early morning hours on Monday, April 13, injuring 19 people. The inspection revealed that all damage to the bus was a result of the crash. The driver, Kimberly Lane, was issued a citation for "speed too fast for conditions." Inspectors discovered the Megabus was operating under the incorrect USDOT authority or USDOT number. Megabus willingly turned over maintenance logs and "black box" data, state police said.

The crash happened on I-65 southbound near Edinburgh around 5:30 a.m. on April 13. While 19 people were hurt, the injuries weren't life threatening. The Megabus rear-ended a semi truck, causing a chain reaction crash. Traffic had stopped on the interstate while equipment in a construction zone moved from the right lane to the median between the northbound and southbound lanes.

Of the 63 passengers on the bus, 19 went to area hospitals. IndyGo buses arrived to shuttle the remaining passengers to a safe location.

The crash marks the fourth Megabus crash in Indiana since October, when several people were injured after a bus crashed near Greenwood. On Dec. 20, one of the company's buses tipped over near Seymour while on its way to Louisville. Ten days later, a Megabus was involved in a crash near Hammond.
