An 89-year-old Greenfield woman heard a noise in her home just after midnight today, police said, and discovered an intruder.

The woman, Jeanne Meddock, confronted the suspect, who snatched her purse from a dining-room table and fled through a back door, said Maj. Derek Towle of the Greenfield Police Department.

Meddock called police to her home in the 400 block of Hawthorne Street, Towle said in a release, and officers followed the suspect’s footprints in the snow to a next-door home.

At the second home, police found Meddock’s purse, which still had its contents, and then arrested Andrew M. Reeves, 23, Greenfield. An online record search indicates Reeves is the victim’s neighbor.

Reeves confessed to the robbery during an interview at the Greenfield Police Department, Towle said. He was booked into the Hancock County Jail.

“Charges are pending prosecutor review of the case,” Towle said.
