The Indianapolis man who killed a woman and removed her eyeballs has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to voluntary manslaughter.

Marion Superior Court Judge Marc Rothenberg sentenced Edeer Avila on Wednesday afternoon, about 21/2 years after police found him covered in blood outside a woman’s house.

Police were called about 11:40 a.m. Nov. 4, 2011, to the 1000 block of South Pershing Avenue on the Westside. Officers found Avila, 24, standing by the front door, wearing blue jeans and wrapped in a bedsheet. His clothing, hands and feet were covered in blood, according to a probable cause affidavit. Police found the woman lying on her side upstairs.

A friend of the victim’s told police that Avila was taken to Wishard Memorial Hospital two days earlier for psychological evaluation, court records say. She also told detectives that she and the victim spoke on the phone the evening of Nov. 3, the same day the victim picked up Avila from the hospital. The friend said that was the last time they talked, according to court records.

The friend went to the victim’s house the morning of Nov. 4. She found Avila there. When she asked him where her friend was, Avila pointed upstairs, court records say.

Avila was charged with murder. He pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in March.

He did not make any statements during his brief sentencing hearing Wednesday in Marion Superior Court.
