Paul Poteet: Wind chills to stay below zero today

Winds will gust to 30 mph through midday, and chills will stay below zero all day long today. Credit the cold front. This latest Arctic intruder brings a few clouds early, with mostly sunny weather much of the day. The winds will back off tonight. The sky will clear and the temperatures will drop below zero north of Indianapolis.

Clouds will steadily increase Friday afternoon, and by late afternoon snow could begin in Terre Haute. It will spread into central Indiana by Friday evening. About an inch is expected by sunrise Saturday.

All signs continue to point to significant precipitation Saturday night into Monday morning. The question has been what kind of precipitation. It's looking more and more like snow, especially to the north of Indianapolis. Places along the I-70 corridor, including Indianapolis, should see mainly snow with some sleet and freezing rain mixing in. The southern quarter of the state is likely to get sleet and freezing rain.

That precipitation type will also affect the amounts involved, which are still "too close to call." What we do know is you should plan on extra time Sunday, be it from all snow in Lafayette and Kokomo; snow and a little wintry mix around Indy, Muncie, and Richmond; and the potential for mainly a mix in Bloomington.
