Expect major congestion on a section of Main Street in Carmel starting today as work begins on a new interchange over U.S. 31.

The Indiana Department of Transportation says contractors will close Main Street on each side of U.S. 31. The closure will stretch to Illinois Street on the west and Pennsylvania Street on the east.

Access to and from U.S. 31 will be restricted through the fall. The intersection of Pennsylvania and Main will remain open but is expected to close later this spring for construction of a roundabout.

The closure of U.S 31 between Old Meridian and 136st streets will begin on or about April 4 as part of the state's ongoing improvements to U.S. 31. Traffic will have access to cross U.S. 31 via Carmel Drive during construction.

The $1.2 billion U.S. 31 project will turn the roadway into a limited access highway by removing 32 traffic lights between I-465 and South Bend. The Hamilton County portion will convert 13 stoplights to free-flowing interchanges, shaving commute times by 10 minutes locally and as much as 30 minutes along the entire corridor, according to transportation officials.
