Catching up with 2015 East Chicago guard Hyron Edwards

Hyron Edwards is hearing from Cal and new coach Cuonzo Martin.

The Adidas Gauntlet brought some of the top high school basketball talent in the country to Fishers Fieldhouse this weekend. I caught up with Hyron Edwards, a 2015 guard from East Chicago Central. In four games this weekend (Edwards didn't play in Sunday's game), he averaged 10 points and 4.3 assists to help Indiana Elite to a 4-1 record. The 5-11 Edwards is ranked as the No. 100 prospect nationally in the 2015 class by Rivals.

Here's a Q&A with Edwards from the weekend:

Are you battling a little bit of a groin injury?

"Yeah I'm not 100 percent at all. When I stop playing, that's when it hurts a lot. But I just have to keep playing and helping my team win. It's not bad when I'm out there playing."

You're starting to get a little deeper into your recruiting process with your senior year coming up. Where do things stand?

"We're still kind of letting the colleges come in. California just called and they are about to offer me soon here in the July period. That's a great school for me, I think. My parents like them, so we'll see when that time comes."

Was Tennessee recruiting you previously when Cuonzo Martin was coaching there? Would you be OK going that far from home?

"Yeah, he was. I would be because coach Cuonzo is a great coach. He'd help me, so I think it be a good situation."

Any other schools coming in lately?

"Actually, West Virginia, Virginia Tech and a little more interest from SEC schools. When I get some more offers, I'll probably start winding it down pretty soon."

How about some of the Big Ten schools, like Indiana and Purdue, that have been on you for a while?

"They have been texting and calling me, so that's pretty cool still. We're keeping on contact. Purdue came and saw me a couple weeks ago at a workout at my school."

Are you hoping to make some visits soon?

"Yeah, but I don't know what schools yet."

Have any schools talked to you about official visits?

"California wants me to come, but I don't know when because we're pretty busy (with tournaments). They are going to tell me a date."

*I also caught up with Columbus North senior-to-be Josh Speidel, a 6-7 forward who averaged 7.8 points in five games for Indiana Elite this weekend. Speidel, one of six players named to the core IndyStar Indiana Junior All-Star team, averaged 17.2 points, 9.3 rebounds and 2.9 assists last season for Columbus North. He has offers from Evansville, Illinois-Chicago, Northern Illinois, Toledo, Northeastern, Buffalo, Vermont and New Orleans.

Are you feeling any anxiety recruiting-wise as you go into your final summer of travel ball?

"I don't think so. I'm just trying to enjoy it. I'm going to take an official visit to Vermont (June 24). Here next week I'm going to Ohio. I'm just trying to get out to some of the places that have contacted me."

Any other schools you are hearing from lately?

"I'm still in contact with Toledo. I'm in contact with (Northwestern coach Chris Collins) a lot. I'm trying to wait until that plays out. I really like Evansville still and Illinois-Chicago, I really like them too."

What is the interest level from Northwestern?

"Personally I'd love an offer from there, that would be something. But I think they are just waiting to see how it plays out. (Collins) came to open gym this spring and went to see Northwestern commit Bryant McIntosh, too. I'm just waiting. He said I looked great and I'm getting more in shape and my shot looks better. That's the feedback I got. He said he'd be around to see me in July."

So are you planning to wait through the July evaluation period?

"It depends. If something catches my eye before then, I may commit. But at the latest, before the school season starts."
