Paul Poteet: Morning snow and cold temperatures today

Paul Poteet

The terrible, taxing winter of 2013-14 has filed an extension. The average low temperature for April 15 in Indianapolis is 43. Our high today will be cooler than that. It will only be in the upper 30s in Muncie and Richmond. Highs will be right around 40 in Lafayette and Indy, and into the low 40s to the south. Wind chills most of the day will stay in the 20s.

Indy had its first measurable April snowfall since 2001. There were two waves of snow. The second was driven by north winds off Lake Michigan that carried the flakes all the way down into central Indiana.

April snow totals

The 0.3 inches of snowfall means the "snow year" (July-June) total for Indianapolis is now 55.7 inches.

Indy's biggest snow seasons

Expect more sunshine by this afternoon, with high pressure right overnight tonight. That will help clear the skies. It will also settle the big breeze and contribute to frost. Southern Indiana has a freeze warning. Not because it will be colder than central Indiana, but because the "growing season" had officially begun in that area.
