TRAFALGAR – Facing elimination, Candace Danz stepped up for Indian Creek when it mattered most Friday night, converting her opportunities at the free throw line as host Indian Creek knocked off Cardinal Ritter 62-51 in sectional semifinal action.

“She played a game tonight that I’ve never seen her play before,” Braves coach Dan Burkman said. “It sounds cliché, but she really wasn’t ready to be done with her high school season.”

Indian Creek (19-4) held a two-point lead after the first quarter, but Ritter (17-6) turned up the pressure on the Braves in the second quarter. Led by Taylor Speckman and Julia Kessling, the Raiders pushed their lead up to eight before Indian Creek cut it to four right before the half.

“I told them at the half that we are too good of an offensive team to be held to 20 points in a half,” Burkman said.

The Braves came out of the second half on a tear and went on a 15-2 run midway through the quarter. Katie Burkman sparked the run with back to back 3-pointers.

Kessling kept the game close with 11 points in the fourth quarter to bring her total to 29, but Danz went to the free throw line 17 times and converted 14 of those tries to give the Braves control of the game. Danz finished with 31 points.

"I did not want to lose at home and we've got another one here (Saturday) now," Danz said.

Indian Creek will play Danville who escaped with a seven-point win over Beech Grove. After committing 11 first-half turnovers the Warriors (19-7) played a much cleaner game in the second half against the Hornets (13-11). Hannah Newby used a strong inside game and Maleha Motter went 7-of-8 from the free throw line in the final quarter to give the Warriors the win.

“I told our seniors to not let this be our last time on the court,” Danville coach Kaley May said. “If we play our brand of basketball I think we’ll be just fine.”

Danville and Indian Creek will play for the sectional championship Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
