Sweet success: 1,400 doughnuts a day, 500,000 calories

No news flash here. We knew Indy's first craft doughnut shop would be a sweet success.

But 1,400 doughnuts a day? That's at least half a million calories the city is taking in. They must be delightful.

General American Donut Co., which opened earlier this month, is selling out on a regular basis and looking to add more to its menu of delectable pastries.

People are coming into the shop at 827 S. East St. for its bourbon maple bacon, salted caramel and peanut butter and jelly varieties. They are clamoring, too, for the Stumptown Coffee Roasters brew.

"The first two days were absolutely nuts," said owner Adam Perry. "We are just starting to get our feet under us and start to organize."

Translation: Organize means more doughnut flavors on the menu, more temptations. The latest came Wednesday, a French toast doughnut. And not far on its heels is the Sun King Brewery beer doughnut.

All of the confections are gourmet flavor combinations, ranging in price from $1.25 to $3.

There's the s'mores doughnut filled with homemade marshmallow fluff and topped with a thick layer of chocolate icing and graham cracker crumbs. There are the specialty items like ice cream sandwiches and Bennies (the shop's version of the cronut).

And if you come in and don't find a doughnut to your liking? No worries. There will be a rotating menu.

"We will be adding flavors on a regular basis," Perry said.
