Where to get the best growler deals every day

Indianapolis Star

This list is out of date! Please find our new list of discounted growler days.

Any craft beer drinker knows the value of a growler. You can invest in two or three, fill them at any brewery and keep a fridge stocked with local brews.

Several local breweries have days where they offer growler fills at discounted rates. Assuming you already have a stash of growlers, you can save some money.

And there are opportunities for big savings as some breweries offer $5 fills on specific days. Here's a list of where to get your growlers filled at a discounted price — with some of my recommendations.

Keep in mind, many breweries offer competitive pricing without a "discount day." Be sure to check with your favorite for their daily rates.

You can’t know if you are really getting a good deal if you don’t know what
64 ounces of beer, the amount in an average growler, looks like.

Sunday

Books & Brews, Indianapolis, $8 fills on select brews

Broad Ripple Brewpub, $2 off

Fountain Square Brewing, Indianapolis, $5 fills

Indiana City Brewing, Indianapolis, half-priced fills

TwoDEEP Brewing, Indianapolis, 25 percent off fills

I'd head to Fountain Square Brewing for the Workingman's Pilsner. This approachable beer is good for Sunday football games, or for taking to a party. You might even convince some Coors Light drinkers to try local.

Growler fills are $5 on Mondays at Tow Yard Brewing.

Monday

Upland Carmel Tap House, $10 fills on Champagne Velvet

I'm reaching for the Standard Abbey Blonde from Taxman Brewing. Not your typical blonde beer, this one yields a lot of flavor.

Thr3e Wise Men, Broad Ripple, $5 bullet fills and $8 growler fills

I'm grabbing a growler of the Dirty Helen Brown Ale from Barley Island Brewing. It's named after my kind of gal -- a tavern owner known for her potty mouth.

Wednesday

Chilly Water Brewing, Indianapolis, $7 fills for "Hippie Hour"

Flat12 Bierwerks, Indianapolis and Jeffersonville, $2 off growlers and $1 off bullets, 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

MashCraft Brewing Company, Greenwood, $1 off

Upland Carmel Tap House, $10 fills on Upland Wheat

Upland Tasting Room, Broad Ripple, $7 fills

I need the Shadow Boxer Oatmeal Stout from Indiana City to round out a good variety in my fridge. This roast-y brew is always available, not just during the cold-weather months.

Barley Island Brewing, Noblesville, $2 off

Oaken Barrel Brewing, Greenwood, $6 fills

Tomlinson Tap Room, Indianapolis, $10 fills on select beers

Upland Carmel Tap House, $10 fills on Bad Elmer's Porter

I have to do it. My "non-beer-drinking" friends will love the Razz Wheat from Oaken Barrel Brewing.

Scotty's Thr3e Wise Men Brewing Co. offers $5-$6 fills on first Fridays.

Friday

Black Swan Brewpub, Plainfield, $6.50 house fills

Ram Restaurant and Brewing, Indianapolis, $6.99 fills

I'm going for Yoshi's Nectar, a California Common style lager -- slightly sweet and not overly hopped.

Happy growler-filling! As, always, please drink responsibly and don't drink and drive.
