Monumental Marathon to affect Downtown traffic Saturday

Justin L. Mack

Motorists heading Downtown Saturday morning will have to find alternate travel routes as runners hit the streets for the seventh annual Monumental Marathon.

The event, which kicks off around 8 a.m., consists of four events: A 26.2 mile marathon, a 13.1 half marathon, a 5K run and a Kids Fun Run.

All events will begin in front of the Indiana State Capitol Building at Washington and Senate Streets.

The planned marathon route will stretch into the Northside along streets such as North Pennsylvania Street, Washington Boulevard and North College Avenue, turning back toward Downtown near East 66th Street in Broad Ripple.

Runners will then head south on North Meridian Street and eventually head southwest toward White River Parkway East, before turning back toward and heading south again on Meridian. Runners will finish in front of the Indiana State Capitol in Downtown.

Officials said the marathon has sold out for the third consecutive year, with space remaining in the half marathon, 5k, and Kids Fun Run.

Marathoners have six and a half hours to complete the race. Closed roads will open as soon as possible.

A full map of the route also can be found at monumentalmarathon.com/courses/IMMfulloverview.pdf.
