A truck hauling 2,000 pigs overturned on the city's Westside Thursday night.

It's not every day you see a pig on the Interstate, much less 2,000.

But more than 2,058 stopped traffic on the highway Thursday night after the truck carrying them overturned on the ramp from I-465 to I-74 westbound.

The Wayne Township Fire Department tweeted at around 6:30 p.m. that the truck had overturned. Firefighters from multiple agencies spent roughly four hours trying to save the animals.

The westbound lane of I-74 from the I-65 northbound ramp was closed for several hours after the accident.

The driver and passenger of the truck were not injured, but 700 piglets died in the accident.

Those who survived were taken to the Indiana State Fairgrounds to spend the night.

The piglets were on a trip from North Carolina to Iowa, according to Wayne Township Fire Department.

"This one is for the (history) books in the city," the department tweeted. "Crews are being relieved by other fire crews due to the workload."
