A van killed a man on a moped Tuesday morning after it struck the scooter and dragged the man and the moped for several hundred feet, police said.

Emergency crews were called to the intersection of 42nd Street and Shadeland Avenue on the Northeastside around 6:15 a.m., according to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.

Witnesses told investigators the van hit the moped and dragged it underneath the vehicle.

Police said the man who drove the van called 911 from several blocks away, near 31st Street and Shadeland Avenue, and is now talking with investigators.

The driver was taken to a local hospital for a blood draw, per protocol.

Debris was scattered dozens of feet across the streets as police investigated Tuesday morning.

Investigators are speaking with witnesses, and will forward the case to the Marion County Prosecutor's Office for review, a press release from IMPD said.

Police have not yet released the names of the man killed or the driver of the van.
