JASPER, Ind. — Officials say two adults and a child were killed during a fire at a southern Indiana house.

Jasper firefighters were called about 4:45 a.m. Wednesday to the two-house just south of the city’s downtown area. The fire caused heavy smoke to pour from the upstairs windows of the house that was divided into apartments.

Fire Chief Kenny Hochgesang tells The Herald that the downstairs residents were able to safely escape the house in the city about 50 miles northeast of Evansville.

The chief tells WFIE-TV that firefighters believe the blaze started in the upstairs apartment, where the three victims were found. A cause of the fire wasn’t immediately known.
