The winter thaw gives many itchy feet to hit the road for treasure hunting. Looking for the worn, aged, unexpected item that you just don't know why but you can't live without? Here are 13 places to get started.

1. Start your search for the unique at Midland Arts & Antiques Market, 907 E. Michigan St.. This gritty Downtown building offers two floors of treasures. There's a Carmel location, too at 488 Gradle Drive.

A must for anyone interested in architectural antiques, vintage clothing, assorted artwork, and other goods manufactured before 1960. This pair brought vintage and salvage to Indianapolis. The real deal.

2. The husband and wife duo behind Tim and Julie's Another Fine Mess, 2901 E. 10th St., are the real deal when it comes to vintage and salvage. Go for architectural antiques, vintage clothing, assorted artwork, and other goods manufactured before 1960.

3. The owners of Society of Salvage + Rewired Antiques, 1021 E. Michigan St., have a great eye for reclaimed gems.

4. Newcomers may think they have driven into a junkyard at Doc's Architectural Salvage, 1325 W. 30th St. Regulars know the place as "Doc's."

It features 600 booths full of everything from antiques and collectible to modern artisan creations. Truly a collector's dream!

5. More than 600 vendors peddle everything from antiques to modern artisan creations at Exit 76 Antique Mall, off I-65 South at Exit 76B, in Edinburgh. A collector's dream.

6. On your way to or back from the Exit 76 Antique Mall, stop at Southport Antique Mall & The Vintage Gypsy, 2028 E. Southport Road. Don't miss the classic clothing shop, known as "the Gypsy," upstairs.

7. With everything from kitchen utensils to a real airplane hanging from the ceiling, Audrey's Place: Thrift Store and Antiques, 3228 E. 10th St., is just fun. Audrey's has been in business for more than 40 years.

8. SoBro's Verdigris, 5208 N. College Ave., is the newest kid in town when it comes to unique gifts and vintage items.

9. A co-op of eclectic collectors bring an assortment of their treasures under one homey little roof at SoBro Vintage Market Antiques and Curiosities, 1051-B, E. 54th St. Sometimes they even have homemade cookies to sample.

10. Since 1998, the truly one-of-a-kind Broad Ripple Vintage, 824 E. 64th St., this has been offering vintage pieces to the Indianapolis area. Jim Morrison is spoken here

12. Check out the great selection of flatware and French porcelain dishes at Locally Grown Gardens, 1050 E. 54th St. This place is like a market you would find in Paris - complete with amazing homemade pie.
