Confirmed cases of chicken pox at three Carmel schools

School officials in Carmel sent out an email to parents Thursday warning that confirmed cases of chicken pox had been discovered in three area schools.

The notice was sent to parents with students at Carmel High School, Clay Middle School and Woodbrook Elementary School.

"Students who have received varicella (chicken pox) vaccine can still get chicken pox," the email warned. "When previously vaccinated students become ill with varicella it is called "breakthrough" chicken pox."

Administrators noted that Indiana law requires all students in kindergarten through 12th grade have two doses of varicella vaccine, unless the student has a history of chicken pox disease.

Officials urged parents who were unsure of their child's vaccination history to contact their physician's office or school nurse for immunization records.

A website, launched by the Indiana State Department of Health, was also provided. MyVaxIndiana allows parents to view their child's immunization record on-line, the email said.
