An IMPD officer was shot in the arm during a two-hour standoff on the south side Saturday, Feb. 13, 2016.

An Indianapolis police officer was shot in the arm, when officers responded to a noise complaint Saturday morning.

The suspected shooter then engaged police in an hours-long standoff before surrendering, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said.

The shooting occurred around 3:20 a.m. in the 1100 block of McDougal Street on the southwest side, IMPD said, as Southeast District Patrol Officer Mark Reynolds was walking beside a resident who had told officers that a next-door neighbor had fired gunshots with some of them hitting her home. The bullet struck Reynolds, an eight-year veteran of the force, in his left forearm before lodging in his body armor. Reynolds underwent surgery to repair a broken arm at IU Health Methodist Hospital, police said Saturday.

Officers set up a perimeter around the home where the shots were coming from, where they said Roger Hawkins, 50, had barricaded himself inside.

After IMPD's special weapons and tactics team arrived, police said, negotiators tried for the next three hours to persuade Hawkins to surrender, with the suspect firing shots sporadically from inside his home throughout the ordeal.

Police then lobbed chemical agents at the house. As Hawkins exited, he was struck with beanbag rounds and arrested.

Hawkins was charged with two preliminary counts of attempted murder and criminal recklessness and taken to the Arrestee Processing Center.

The Marion County prosecutor will make a final determination on charges.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to our officer and his family for a speedy recovery,” IMPD Chief Troy Riggs said.  “This incident could have resulted in a number of casualties, but I am proud of our officers for bringing this incident to a peaceful resolution.”
