A woman was taken into custody early Friday morning after crashing a vehicle into a south side sub shop, Fox59 reported.

The crash happened around 5:30 a.m. at Greiner’s Sub Shop in the 2000 block of Shelby Street. Police said the crash appeared to be intentional, although the driver wasn't aware that an employee was inside at the time.

The SUV hit the female employee, who was struck by the SUV and debris and pinned inside. The woman, identified as Tina Scruggs, had to be extricated and was in critical condition at Eskenazi Hospital.

"We believe that the driver of the vehicle is probably under some type of mental disorder or some type of mental episode," said Capt. Richard Riddle with IMPD.

An employee at a gas station across the street witnessed the crash and called 911, police said. The driver of the SUV was taken into custody at the gas station.

"We don’t know if there’s any correlation or any connection between our driver and our victim which would leave our driver to intentionally strike the employee inside," Riddle said.

Riddle described the crash as an "intentional but random" act.
